d. What is a visa and will I need one?
A visa is a stamp or other notation placed in your passport that will allow you to enter and temporarily reside in your host country during your program. A visa is required for all year and semester programs and for many of the summer programs.
e. How to apply for visas?
Visas are obtained through the Consular Offices of a country’s Embassy. While the most of the Embassies are located in Kathmandu itself, there are some countries, for example, Poland, whose Visa needs to be processed from New Delhi, capital city of India.

However, in case of U.K. and New Zealand, if your visa is denied, then you will get your tuition fees refunded.
What happens when I arrive in my destination country?
First, you get off at the airport where you will be interrogated by custom officials regarding your purpose of visit, your visa status and also your address in the destination country. Then after claiming your luggage, you head towards your college or any accommodation that you might have booked in advance. Many colleges provide international students with airport pickup facility if they have decided to reside in college hostel. Otherwise you will need to hire a cab or train or any other means of transport.
Who will support me there?

Do I need a medical insurance? What if I am insured by my family’s medical plan?
Yes, medical insurance is compulsory. Even if you are insured by your family’s medical plan, you will need a secondary insurance. It is for your own safety and security. In case any misfortunes happen or in case of any emergency, you will be treated as soon as possible.
Can you solve my queries regarding banking while abroad?
First, you will need to open a bank account in that country which you are able to do once you get your social security number. After that it depends on your preference whether to choose credit or debit card and obtain all the information regarding bank fees and other charges. Once you have this information, you can start spending at your convenience.
In case of India, your Nepali Debit Card will work there. However, some amount will be deducted from your every transaction.
How much money can I take?
It depends on the spending habit of the student as well as the location where the student is opting for. Some areas might be cheaper as compared to another area. So student should plan before hand and get the dollars exchanged from Nepal Rastra Bank or any other private bank as soon as they obtain the visa.
However, the limit for exchange is $2500 in cash and the remaining amount can be exchanged through International Card or Travellers Cheque.
Is there anything I won’t be able to do abroad?
Yes. All participants must be law abiding in their host country. There may be country-specific rules that apply. There also are limits on traveling independently. In a new environment, it’s important to be more aware than you might be at home. And remember: you are a student ambassador for the destination country, so it will be important to act respectfully toward others and to give extra attention to being culturally aware. Students may be sent home for breaking rules or laws, or for persistent behavioral issues.
Can I come back to Nepal or other countries for holiday?
Yes you definitely can come back to Nepal during your holidays. You will be issued a multiple visa and it is your country after all. But, in case of other countries you will need to check the visa requirements of the country you want to visit and plan your trip accordingly.
